All About WorkIT

What is WorkIT?

A unique, intuitive and innovative web enabled work experience program, designed to be used by:

  • Students
  • School work experience coordinators
  • Local authority work experience administrators
  • Health and Safety officers

WorkIT is interactive, secure and offers a real-time booking system. Students can apply online for vacancies and administrators can allocate places to schools through the website. The program creates all necessary documentation locally.

Students

Allows students to browse opportunities and use an interactive on-line booking system which sends requests to the school coordinator. Other features include case studies; a quiz called WorkIT Out to assist students who are not sure about what kind of work experience they would like and integrated links with PlanIT Plus - Scotland's most widely used careers and educational website.

Teachers

Provides an administrative and management resource to deal with student requests. An integrated mail merge facility creates various letters e.g. parents, employers and all the required legal documentation for health and safety purposes. Management reports can be produced.

Once requests are accepted or declined at this level the number of opportunities will automatically reduce and will be removed from the student zone when all vacancies are taken.

Employers

Any employers wishing more information on the benefits of becoming involved and details of local contacts please access the employers zone.

Local Authorities

The program provides a robust management tool for administering work experience. The administrator can add and edit employer details, opportunities, risk assessments, potential hazards, control measures and assign and allocate opportunities to schools. In addition, it offers a facility allowing health & safety officers permission to update relevant information on opportunities about health and safety issues e.g. approval status, insurance, records of checks and visits and additional comments. An integrated mail merge facility creating various letters and management reports are produced. WorkIT also manages the self found request made by students.

The system can accommodate data transfer uploads from local authority and their school management systems.

History

The program was first commissioned by 4 Local Authorities - Glasgow, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire. As a result of its success a total of 22 Local Authorities in Scotland now subscribe to WorkIT with many more expressing an interest. The program has been commended in school HMI reports as a system that encourages good practice in delivering work experience.

The site was also originally developed with the support of the European Social Fund, also, in conjunction with the Equal Opportunities Commission (Scotland).
